Trailer Service and Maintenance

Just like vehicles, trailers need regular service and maintenance in order to operate safely and efficiently, as well as maximize their lifespan! 

Before you Tow:

Inspect Breakaway System - Ensure proper connections, check battery charge level, and make sure the breakaway wire is connected to the vehicle correctly.

Trailer Brakes (if applicable) - Ensure proper operation and make adjustments as needed.

Lights - Check all lights, brakes, and turn signals for proper operation. Repair or replace as needed.

Safety Chains and Hooks - Ensure proper connection to the vehicle, check for wear and damage. Replace as needed.

Coupler Hitch and Ball - Ensure proper connection, proper ball size, and ensure the trailer GVWR does not exceed the vehicle hitch rating. Check for wear and damage, replace as necessary.

Tires - Check pressure, inflate to proper PSI. Check for wear and damage, replace tires as needed.

Lug Nuts - Torque lug nuts to manufacturer specifications. On new trailers, check after first 10, 25, and 50 miles.

Every Six Months:

Brakes - Check wear and electrical current draw. Check pads and replace as needed.

Tires - Thoroughly check tread and sidewalls for wear or damage. Rotate every 5,000 miles. Check pressure.

Safety Chains and Hooks -  Check for wear and damage, replace as needed.

Lights - Check all lights, brakes, and turn signals for proper operation and replace lights as needed.

Wheel Bearings - Check for any loose, worn or damaged bearings. Lubricate or replace as necessary.

Lubrication - Lubricate all door and gate hinges, jacks, couplers, etc.

Every Year:

Brakes - Check wear and tear, electrical current draw, and replace components per manufacturer specifications.

Structural Frame - Check all main beams and cross members, bolts, welds, and rivets. Replace or repair if worn, rusted or damaged.

Wheel Bearings - Disassemble, inspect, assemble, and repack. Replace immediately if submersed in water.

Wiring - Check for nicks, bare spots, fraying, etc. and replace as needed.
